CUSTOM FURNITURE FOR THE VIKING AGE

Folump Enterprises is happy to provide some pieces of furniture that will fit into your Early Medieval Camp. All furniture is hand made, may differ slightly and is irregular at points. Furniture can be designed according to personal desires and is based on period designs and years of experience. Please consult with us about your specific individual needs.

Lund Stool

stool2.jpg

The three-legged, D-shaped stool has been found in several sites and is similar in style to modern milking stools in Scandinavia. but is primarily based on the 11C stool found in Lund, Sweden. It is about 15 inches long and 8 inches wide. Stool leg heights were rather short, and we have proportioned their length to work with the table. We use standard-sized lumber and make modifications for sturdiness and modern concerns.

Sala Hytta Table

table2.jpg

Based on the simple table found in a 10C grave at Sala Hytta in Västmanland. The table was apparently not used for sitting, but to set drinks and basins on, and the top is slightly indented. The original table is 17 inches long, 8 inches wide. thick with four legs that are a little more than 8 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter. We use standard-sized lumber and make modifications for sturdiness and modern concerns.

Standard Bench

We have many fragments of benches from the period. There are benches that had wooden ends and even backs, but we have chosen a simple style that is easier to transport, with legs similar to those used in the York stool and that were still being used in the 19C. Lengths vary, though a plank found in Gaulverjabaer, Iceland, was about 26 inches long. The original benches were also sometimes decorated, though we have left the surface unadorned. We use standard-sized lumber and make modifications for sturdiness and modern concerns.

Drunken Viking” Bench

dvbench2.jpg

Otherwise not different from the standard bench, six-legged benches and stools have been found in 10C sites in Dublin. This might have been a style, but someone referred to them—perhaps humorously—as Drunk Viking benches, whose third leg at each end of the bench kept the fat drunken Viking sitting on one end of the bench from tumbling to the ground when the stool tipped up when the fat drunken Viking on the other end got up. We use standard-sized lumber and make modifications for sturdiness and modern concerns.

The legs were probably originally affixed with hide glue. We have left them unattached for ease in transport, but they may be easily affixed with glue and/or nails. Please note that they were originally made to fit snugly but not too snugly, but wear can wear away the outside of the legs and the inside of the holes, and changes in weather can mean that the legs will be looser when dry—see for example wood casks which are not water tight when dry—and will be swollen when wet or moist.

Woods are stained but left unfinished unless specifically requested. Standard finish is linseed oil with pumice or rottenstone if requested. Standard stains available are Early American, Dark Walnut and Golden Oak, although straight linseed oil can be used as a stain.
